In this project, I delved into the intricacies of Brussels' traffic safety. Fueled by the city's ongoing protests against mobility plans, I sought answers to questions such as “How had traffic safety evolved, and what factors influenced it?” Exploring this, I envisioned an interactive map as the storytelling canvas, aiming to shed light on the city's traffic dynamics and spark discussions on safety concerns.
Creating a story based on data only was quite complex.I needed to explore extensive data of traffic safety in the region of Brussels, combining different sources and looking for correlations between them. Dissecting the complexities of mobility plans and protests also came into play. I framed my inquiry around a fundamental question: what defines safety for a commuter? The answer led me to craft an interactive map of traffic accidents with added contextualization and the highlight of potential causes such as speed limit.
The interactive map and the associated webpage was a tool powerful enough to encapsulate diverse data layers and engage the audience effectively. This map, a dynamic story unfolding upon scrolling, was not just an isolated exploration but a potential catalyst for broader discussions and analyses.
The project served as a transformative learning experience, revealing the essential synergy between data analysis and effective visual storytelling. Through this, I grasped the intricate dance between creativity and technology, realizing the potential and solutions programming languages offer to visual journalism. While initially daunting, the project served as a catalyst, compelling me to delve into the world of web development, pushing my boundaries and nurturing my passion for data-driven narratives.
